The Pursuit of Leather
Posted by CRAFTBANK- THE BOOTS SHOP on

In early November, with an unseasonable warmth still lingering in the air and a trace of summer seemingly reluctant to fade, we made our way to Tatsuno City in southwestern Hyogo Prefecture.
Our destination was Kodera Leather, a long-established tannery that has been producing leather in this region for nearly 80 years and now plays an important role in creating some of the key leathers used by ROLLING DUB TRIO.
During this visit, we were able to follow the entire process once again from the raw hide through tanning, dyeing, drying, and final finishing, seeing firsthand how a hide gradually becomes a finished piece of leather.
Moisture, temperature, and the condition of the leather on any given day all matter. Even within a carefully established process, there are countless moments that still rely on the eyes, hands, and experience of the craftspeople.
Behind every piece of leather we normally see lies a great deal of time, skill, and handwork.
As we walked through the tannery, we were shown each stage in detail, while also taking the opportunity to exchange ideas about the kinds of leather we hope to create in the future.
The more we learn about the material, the more we realize just how deep the world of leather truly is.
We are already looking forward to seeing how the leather currently in development will turn out and what kind of character it will ultimately reveal.
After finishing our visit, we spent the evening enjoying local dishes and fresh seafood from Tatsuno, taking some time to relax together.
Our sincere thanks to President Kodera, Mr. Morita, Mr. Kishimoto, and all of the craftspeople involved in the production for once again giving us their valuable time.
We also captured this visit on film.
We hope the finished movie will allow you to feel not only the process itself, but also the atmosphere of the place where the leather is made.
Please look forward to its release.
